Updated family line of Carl Joseph Moskop, my 3rd Great Grandfather

My 3rd Great Grandfather, Carolus “Carl” Joseph Moskop b 5/12/1807 in Rubenach Germany. His parents are Franz Ludwig and Catharina Oerter. . .   His wife was Catharina Schmitd of Karlich, dau of Stephani Schmitt and Catharina Dott. Catharina and Carl married Feb 3 1833 in Rubenach.

1.      Maria Katherine born Dec 16 1833 in Rubennach, Koblenz Germany. She immigrated to the USA in 1852 on the Florida with her parents. She died in Bono Arkansas Feb 16, 1917. She married Jacob Eich whom also came over on the Florida. They married 19 Mar 1855 in Monroe Co. Ill.  Her obit says she was born in Rubennach and immigrated with her parents Mr and Mrs Conrad Moskop. She had 8 children.

2.      Margaret was born 2/12/1835 in Rubennach, Koblenz Germany. She is on the Florida passenger list as age 17 in 1852. She is mentioned in 1917 in her sister’s obit as the only living sister Margaret Anheier. There is a William Anheier on the passenger list 2 lines down from her. So I believe he could be the person she married. But I have not found any more info on her.

3.      Gertrude was born 11/13/1836 in Rubennach, Koblenz Germany.

4.      Peter (Petrus) was born 10/19/1838 in Rubennach, Koblenz Germany. He is on the passenger list of the Florida

5.      Charles “Karl” was born Jun 7 1840 in Germany. (Source of this date came from his headstone.) I know that Charles is the son of Catherine because he lives with her and his 2 brothers on the 1860 census in Monroe City, Illinois. I found his death record on the church book of Madonnaville and he is named as child of Carl and Catherine Moskop. He died on April 22 1907 and is buried at Madonnaville Cemetery in Monroe Illinois. He was married 2 times and fathered 16 children, 6 lived to adulthood. In 1873 his wife Margaretha nee Merlenbach and 3 children died.  Margaretha died in Jan of 1873 from typhoid fever, Johannes age 2 died in March from typhoid, Anna Maria 13 months old died in Sep, and Charles age 5 died in Nov 1873. Two of their other children who died in earlier years were, Conrad  (2/15/1863-4/10/1863) and Johanna (12/20/1867-1/17/1868). So of the 7 children he had with Margaretha, only 2 lived to be adults, Catherine (2/10/1864-2/8/1884) she was 20 when she died, and Frances Henry “Frank” (1/29/1866-7/25/1943) who lived to be 77. So when Marg died, Karl was left with 5 small children the 3 under the age of 5 who all died in 1873 and two, ages 9 and 10. On May 21 1873 he married Magdelena Kipping who was 16 years younger than he and age 17 at the time of marriage.  I would imagine he knew Magdelana when his first wife died, and he married her right away (5 months after the 1st wife died) because he needed someone to take care of the young children he had. They lived in Monroe Ill, but they married in St Louis and the witnesses were Lorenz and Maria Moskop. I still have not determined how Lorenz is related to my line.

6.      Conrad was born Dec 19 1846 (per his death certificate, and German birth record) Rubennach, Koblenz Germany. He is on the passenger list with the family and he lives with Catherine in 1860 and 2 brothers. He died May 28 1928 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Verona, Missouri. He married Eva Maria Mosbacher Jan 4 1869 in Monroe co Illinois, and they had 10 children, 7 who lived to adulthood.

7.      Johann “John” my 2nd great grandfather was born Aug 27 1850 (per German birth record) in Rubennach, Koblenz Germany. He married Sophia Timmerman Jan 28th 1873 at Madonnaville in Monroe co Illinois, and the marriage record says he is 22, so that would make him born 1851. Also on the Florida passenger list in 1852 there is an infant stated to be Joseph. I believe this is John, and perhaps Joseph was his first name. His fathers full name is Carl Joseph Moskop) He fathered 8 children with Sophia, 2 of them died as infants, one at birth and the other at 4 days old. Between May of 1888 and May of 1889 they moved to Randolph co, Arkansas. His older sister Katherine Eich moved to Ark around the same time period. The last 2 children of John and Sophia are born in Ark. Walter which is my Great Grandfather is born in May 1889. And an infant also is born and dies in 1891. Sophia dies in 1891 in Ark. It is possible she died from child birth. So her death left him with 5 children, ages 3, 4, 7, 15 and 18. April 3rd 1892 John married Minnie Ellis in Randolph Co Arkansas. She was 21 years old and he was 41. Again we see a quick marriage to a much younger woman to take care of his children. John and Minnie had 6 children. Bessie, Early Lee, Bert, Robert Jay, Hattie, Eugene. All born and died in Arkansas. I don’t know what nationality Minnie is, but I doubt she is German, because her children don’t have German names like all the other Moskop’s in this line so far.

In May 1852 Carl Joseph Moskop and Catherine, along with their children immigrated to the USA on a ship called the Florida. Carl Joseph Moskop only live 2 years after he came to America. They lived in Monroe co, Illinois. He died June 21, 1854 and is buried at Madonnaville Cemetery. Catherine is found on the 1860 census in Monroe City, township 3 S Range 10 W: Enumerated on Sep 22 1860. She is a widow, age 55 and her 3  sons live with her, Charles 21, Conrad 14 and John 12. I discovered Catherine maiden name was Schmit when I found her death record in the Madonnaville Church records. She is listed as Catherine Grebel, (Krebel is the correct spelling) and that she died Nov 7 1888 as Catherine Grebel first wife of Carl Moskop wife of Nicolas Grebel, dau of Stephani and Anne Schmidt. Then I learned that Nicolas Krebel with his wife Ann and 3 children also came over on the Florida and lived in the same area as the Moskops. Nicholas’s wife Anna must have died before 1864 because he married Catharine Moskop on Feb 8, 1864. (I found their marriage record in the Madonnaville church records) It is very possible that the Krebel’s and Moskop’s knew each other in Germany and were family friends the whole time. Then the 2 being widowed and knowing each other well got married in 1864. Nicholas died May 7 1870. I think I found Catherine on the 1870 census as Catherine Grebel (Grebel and Krebel seem to be misspelled quit often). Its in Monroe co, township 3S Range 10W which is where she is on 1860  census. It was enumerated on June 7th, 1870 and her husband Nicholas Krebel died in May 1870. The only other person in the household is John age 20. This could be my 2nd Great Gpa John Moskop born abt 1850. This would explain why I can’t find John Moskop on the 1870 census. The census taker listed him under her married name Grebel/Krebel instead of Moskop.

I found this baptism record for Joseph Moskop born November 1854. Parents are Carl and Catherine. . Conrad (Carl) died Jun 1854, so he would have been dead when this child was born.  The god parents are Joseph and Frances Berger. This was found in the baptism church book of St Peter and St Paul in Waterloo, ILL
